Sudan plunges into disaster – Nearly $1.5 billion in aid to country

International donors today pledged nearly $1.5 billion to help the Sudan which plunges into destruction and violence with “unprecedented” speed. “This crisis will need continuous financial support and I hope we can all keep Sudan at the top of our priorities,” Martin Griffiths, the UN humanitarian chief, said at the end of the donor conference in Geneva, according to the Athens News Agency.

The conference was organized through her three-day ceasefire in Sudan which appears to have restored calm to the capital Khartoum.

Although Griffiths highlighted the donors’ generosity, the amount represents only half of what humanitarian agencies estimate they need this year to help the population, which is already in severe crisis and has been hit by heavy fighting between the military and paramilitaries. worsen even more.

Of the 3 billion dollars that the UN needs in total, only 17% of this amount has been met so far, at a time when 25 million Sudanese, more than half the population, depend on humanitarian aid to survive.

Details of the amounts – donations

Germany – the conference’s co-host along with the EU, Qatar, Egypt and Saudi Arabia – pledged to give 200 million euros by 2024. Qatar promised 50 million dollars. The EU pledged to give 190 million euros for humanitarian and development aid. The US pledged to give 171 million dollars. The UN has announced that it is donating more 22 million dollars to address the first needs.

The head of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, insisted that aid from the international community must be paid quickly.

In two months of conflict, more than 2,000 people have died, according to the NGO Acled, and more than 2.5 million have been forced to flee to other parts of Sudan or other countries.
