Sudan: Politician arrested again for involvement in government overthrown in October military coup

A Sudanese politician who was ousted in the October military coup was arrested again on Sunday, a party official said, adding that dozens of pro-democracy activists and leaders in the African country had been driven behind bars.

“Mohammed al-Faki, a former member of the State Council, was arrested while in a car with a friend by members of the security forces, who took him to an unknown destination,” a member of his United Alliance faction told AFP.

Mr. Faki was the youngest member of the State Council formed after the October 25 coup, which ended after the 2019 uprising that ended 30 years of military and Islamist dictatorship under Omar al-Bashir. The seats in it were shared by the military and civilians; in theory, it would lead Sudan to its first free elections.

He was arrested on the day of the coup, along with most of his fellow politicians, as his president, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan,’s commander-in-chief, cut off what might be a democratic bracket and took it into his own hands. .

He was released a few days later but re-arrested, as was the former head of the political government that was overthrown on October 25, Khalid Omar Youssef, who was detained on Wednesday amid a rally at a political party headquarters.

Both were members of the commission tasked with recovering public funds ransacked by the Bashir regime. The commission is being targeted by the military, which activists say is intended to resurrect the ancien régime.

While the democratization front in the country denounces “political arrests”, General Burhan assured the state on Saturday, speaking on state television, that these are decisions of an independent judiciary.

The new arrests were made on the eve of new mass mobilizations against the military regime.
