Sudan: Warring parties meet in Saudi Arabia – Only open to ceasefire on humanitarian grounds

In Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, its warring sides are expected to meet this Saturday Sudan for talks that, if they go well, may end the violent conflicts that have claimed the lives of hundreds of people and forced tens of thousands of refugees to flee abroad.

THE Saudi Arabia and the US welcomed the start of “pre-negotiation talks” between the Sudanese military and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group, and called on both sides to actively engage and reach a ceasefireaccording to a joint statement.

The Sudan Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC), a political formation that has a key role in the internationally-backed plan to transition to a civilian rule, also welcomed the talks in Jeddah.

Sudan’s armed forces announced that they had sent representatives to Jeddah. DTY did not immediately confirm that they will participate in the processbut also the two sides have said they will only discuss a humanitarian armistice, not an end to the war.
