Sudanese army promises retaliation for militia attack on village

The Sudanese Army said this Thursday (6) that it will give a “tough response” to the attack that took place a day earlier on a village by the Sudanese paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Witnesses told the CNN that at least 150 people were killed and 200 injured in the attack by rebel forces.

The conflict in the country has lasted 1 year and displaced more than 7 million people.

The attack was the largest in a series of dozens carried out by RSF soldiers on small villages after the group took control of the town, Wad Madani, in December.

The highest authority of the United Nations in Sudan called, this Thursday (6), for an investigation into the attack on the village of Wad al-Noura, in the State of Gezira, in the center of the country.

“Even by the tragic standards of the Sudanese conflict, the images arriving from Wad Al-Noura are heartbreaking,” UN humanitarian coordinator Clementine Nkweta-Salami said in a statement.

The coordinator cited photos shared on social media by the Wad Madani Resistance Committee, which has been following these attacks, showing what she described as dozens of victims prepared for burial.

A telecommunications blackout prevented Reuters from contacting doctors or residents to verify details.

The RSF began fighting the Army in April 2023, after disputes over the integration of the two forces, and has since taken the capital Khartoum and most of the west of the country.

Now, the group seeks to advance into the center of the territory, and UN agencies say that the people of Sudan are at “imminent risk of malnutrition”.
