“I am also shocked by the fact that a healthy person’s heart can simply stop beating without any warning sign.” Two months after the sudden death of her partner at the age of 31, Daniel Riley is still struggling to figure out how this could have happened to her Andy.
They met when they were still teenagers and welcomed little Arlos into their lives two years ago. Their wedding was scheduled for this summer, after being postponed due to the pandemic. They dreamed that they would grow old together.
There were no alarming signs warning of what would happen to anyone symptom that he needed the help of a doctor. But on the morning of January 15, Andy Kay collapsed in the family bathroom in England. A little while later his death would be confirmed.
“THE heart “He broke me twice that day,” 29-year-old Daniel told the BBC. “Once for me and once for Arlos. It is not fair that he will not have his dad growing up “.
One physician concluded that Andy died of Sudden Arrhythmia Death Syndrome (SADS), also known as Adult Sudden Death Syndrome.
Until this year, Daniel had never heard of it before.
An estimated 12 people under the age of 35 die suddenly from a previously undiagnosed heart condition each week in the UK. Research has shown that 80% of these deaths occur without any previous symptoms.
A breakfast like everything else
The morning of Andy’s death started like everything else, Daniel recalls. “We woke up together like every day that Friday and started getting ready for work.
“I took our son down for breakfast and packed our things for work and daycare, while Andy took a shower.”
But time passed and he wondered why Andy was so late. Not getting any answer, he remembers trying like crazy to break the locked door to no avail. Then she called her father for help.
As soon as they entered, they found that Andy had collapsed in the bathroom. They started first aid with the help of a specialist on the other end of the phone. “I just remember screaming that this could not happen, I thought he might have slipped and hit his head.”
Despite the efforts of the doctors, however, Andy’s life could not be saved.
