Suez Canal: At least 240 ships will have passed by tonight after Ever Given detaches

More than 100 ships passed through Suez Canal in both directions after the Ever Given ship, which was blocking the passage, detached, as broadcast today by the Egyptian state television.

Almost 113 ships passed through the canal by 09:00 Greek time this morning, as foreseen by the plans of the (beginning of) canal that had been previously announced.

The passage of ships through the canal resumed yesterday afternoon after the detachment with the help of trailers of the 400 meter long container ship Ever Given from the place where it had run aground on March 23, as reminded by AMPE.

For its part, the Suez Canal Authority expects to see 140 ships pass through the sea today after the Ever Given detaches.

Authority chief Osama Rabbi said 95 ships would pass by 7pm local time and another 45 by midnight, confirming that hopes that the waiting ships will be gone in three to four days.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said today that the sinking of a huge container ship on the Suez Canal reaffirmed the importance of this sea route.

“We did not expect such a thing, but fate did its job. “It showed and reaffirmed the reality and importance of the canal,” Sisi told staff during a visit to the Suez Canal Authority in Ismailia.
