Suez Canal: Ever Given to be detached by early next week

The giant container ship that ran aground in Suez Canal could be detached by early next week thanks to a combination of the use of larger tugs, dredging and flooding, said a Dutch boat detachment company.

The 400-meter Ever Given ran aground in the southern part of the Canal amid strong winds early Tuesday, causing problems for global navigation as it blocked one of the world’s major sea lanes.

The dredgers had until yesterday removed about 20,000 tons of sand around the bow of the ship, however the towing operation of the boat was suspended overnight.

“Our goal is to do it after the weekend, but everything should work out in its favor,” Peter Berdowski, Boskalis’ chief executive, told Dutch television late yesterday. Boskalis is the owner of Smit Salvage, which was commissioned this week to help the Egyptian authority on the Suez Canal (SCA) dismantle the boat.

Smit Salvage, however, has been more cautious than the president of Shoei Kisen, the owner of Ever Given, who said he hoped the ship would detach tonight.
