Sugarcane production starts to show recovery

In an interview with CNN This Saturday (20), the director of the National Supply Company (Conab), Sergio De Zen, explained that recovery in sugarcane production was already expected by the sector.

“We come from a very high pay period, especially for sugar. In the international market, it had a post-pandemic price growth that was accentuated and this bases a greater investment in some regions of the country.

Sugarcane crushing in the second half of July in the Center-South region of Brazil increased by 4.3% compared to the same period last year — there were 2.02 million more tons of processed cane. In total, 48.93 million tons were registered in this period and the accumulated harvest is 282.79 million tons.

The data were released by the Sugarcane Industry Association (Unica).

Despite the increase, De Zen said that the sugar and ethanol sector needs more investment.

“All the balances between the regions of Brazil show that we have reasons to celebrate with a great harvest, but there is something to worry about. The sector needs to invest more, perhaps in genetics. It is a reflection that needs to be done”, said the director of Conab.

According to him, this is necessary for the sector to be large in terms of productivity per planted area. “Especially in the Southeast and South regions, because the competition between sugarcane and soybean and corn crops in the same area, there is a higher sugarcane productivity.
