Suicidal attack in the capital of Somalia kills at least 10 people in line

At least 10 people were killed on Sunday after a bomb man attacked a line of young recruits at the Damanyo military base in the Somalian capital, Mogadiscius, witnesses told Reuters.

Teenagers line up at the base gate when the aggressor detonated the explosives, they said.

A military captain who identified himself as Suleiman described the attack as he saw him happen.

“I was across the street. A tuk-tuk at high speed stopped, a man went down, ran to the line and then exploded. I saw 10 people dead, including recruits and pedestrians. The dead can increase,” he said.

Dozens of abandoned shoes and the remains of the bomb man were visible at the scene.

Another witness, Abdisalan Mohamed, said he saw “hundreds of teenagers at the gate while we passed by bus.”

“Suddenly there was a deafening explosion, and the area was covered by a dense smoke. We couldn’t see the details of the victims,” he said.

The medical team of the Military Hospital informed Reuters that it received 30 injured in the explosion and that six of them died immediately.

The forces of the Government of Somalia quickly isolated the entire area.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack and government authorities could not be contacted immediately to obtain comments.

The attack echoed a similar incident in 2023, when a bomb man killed 25 soldiers at Jale Siyad base, located in front of Damanyo’s facilities.

Sunday’s attack occurred after the murder on Saturday, by Colonel Abdirahmaan Hujaale, commander of the 26th Battalion, in the region of Hiran, amid local reports of infiltration of al-Shabaab militants in government and security forces.
