Suitcase-sized six-wheeled robots deliver parcels and letters to Moscow neighborhoods

Autonomous robots are beginning to deliver parcels to some of its neighborhoods Moscow after collaboration with the tech giant Yandex (YNDX.O) with the civil service Russian Post, both companies said on Monday.

THE Yandex, which manages a range of services from online search to maps and online stores, already uses robots to deliver food to Russia and some American campuses USA in collaboration with GrubHub, but the connection to the Russian Federal Postal Service could expand its reach.

In a joint statement, the Yandex and the Russian Post reported that 36 six-wheeled robots the size of a suitcase would initially deliver parcels and letters from 27 post offices in various parts of the Russian capital as part of a pilot project, with recipients being able to choose to deliver robots using an application.

Users through this application will be able to watch the six-wheeled, black and white robots as they cross the city and will be able to access their parcel using a unique verification code.

“Every part of the logistics chain can be automated and technologies change processes at every stage: from the first to the last mile,” he told Reuters The Stanislav Chernin, Head of Innovation at the Russian Post.

THE Russian Post has over 38,000 branches in the largest country in the world and handles more than 108 million parcels each year.
