«You can guide what to do at the University and where to go to do it. We do the first thing: we try to orient the students vto the most suitable degree courses for them “. The goal is clear for Roberto Costantini, director of the Summer School & Luiss Hubs of the Luiss Guido Carli University: introducing the students who are still in high school to the University. Not necessarily Luiss as it also includes degree courses that this University does not offer.
There Luiss Summer School is the summer program that helps students to orient themselves in their university choice. The program has been active since 2011 and every summer welcomes and guides over 1300 students who decide to experience a week of full immersion on the University campus.
What do you do? You live a university week at 360 degrees, attending lessons and workshops, experimenting with extra didactic activities. The Summer School is divided into four courses: the Basic Coding and the Writing they are aimed at students from the first to the penultimate year of high school. Basic Coding allows you to get in touch with the basic concepts of programming, Writing immerses students in the world of screenwriting and film and television writing. Orientation 3 is designed for third year high school students, Orientation 4 is aimed at penultimate year of high school students.
How difficult is it for students to choose? «The vast majority of students who leave high school are at least uncertain between two or three possible choices and then end up choosing on the basis of informative, collective, and non-experiential questions. The first are orientation salons, parents, friends, the internet. They are a mountain of information. None experience: it is as if one were to sign a contract to do a sport all one’s life without having ever practiced it, but for having seen it play on television ».
Making a mistake with a choice does not simply have the cost of changing course, it can lead to a whole one work life which does not matter because a university course can still be completed, “but not to reach a satisfying working life by exploiting one’s potential”.
The lessons are university-oriented even if they are not intended to fully teach macroeconomics, for example. “It wouldn’t make sense to do it in a week.” “Those who attend summer school usually do not ask to change their degree course” adds Costantini as a sign of the usefulness of the courses. There have been 14 thousand students in 10 years since these summer weeks.
«With the choice of courses today, it is unlikely that there is not a course suitable for the student who enrolls, who realize its full potential. The problem is finding it. There is no degree in this historical moment that is not useful and does not lead to a job if you excel in the field in which you graduate. The boys have to follow their own inclinations based on experiences rather than chatter ».
