Summit: EU “27” to adopt declaration on labor and social rights

The leaders of its 27 governments The European Union are expected to adopt today, during their informal meeting in Porto, a declaration on employment and poverty.

“The social dimension, social dialogue and the active participation of the social partners have always been at the core of a competitive social market economy,” the leaders said, according to a draft document seen by the German agency.

“Our commitment to unity and solidarity also means ensuring equal opportunities for all and that no one will be left behind,” they said.

In the draft statement, leaders also pledged to fight gender-based discrimination and tackle poverty.

THE informal meeting It comes a day after a high-level employment conference, after which top EU officials and representatives of the world of work signed a joint document promising to create jobs.

However, as the German Agency notes, the talks on the EU social agenda – dominated by discussions on unemployment, specialization and wages – may be sidelined by current issues.
