Summit: K. Mitsotakis’s request for energy support measures accepted

LAST UPDATE: 23.15

Emergency measures are required to be prepared by the Commission on energy costs as set out in point 10 of the text of the conclusions of the Brussels European Council.

Government sources state that the specific report on the taking of emergency measures in the energy sector, as the Prime Minister stressed, was not in the original text and was included following a proposal and actions of the Greek side with the consent of other countries.

The Prime Minister is currently giving the “present” to the work of the extraordinary Session, which will move in two directions. The first is related to the next wave of sanctions against Russia, but also Belarus. The second is related to the energy part.

In his statement, coming to the extraordinary Summit, Mr. Mitsotakis stressed that the response of Brussels to Russia will be extremely dynamic. “We are here together to take decisions on harsh sanctions against Russia,” he said. Focusing on energy, the Prime Minister said that he had asked for a provision to be included in the conclusions of the Extraordinary Session, which would authorize the European Commission to consider and immediately propose to the Council emergency measures to support Member States in the face of possible sharp increases. energy prices. Kyriakos Mitsotakis is expected, in his speech, to raise the need for a common European response, so that citizens can face the large increases in energy prices.

Athens emphasizes that the European family must act united and in coordination, in order not to be held hostage by Russia. And the logic of the response, in order to deal with the impact that the crisis will have on European consumers and businesses, must be similar to that of the pandemic.
