Summit: Orban is asking for additional guarantees

European leaders are in talks at the Brussels summit on a sixth package of sanctions against Russia.

Shortly before 22.00 (Greek time) more than half had spoken, while everyone is in favor of an agreement.

According to a European source, there is “political pressure” to reach an agreement, while – according to the same source – the Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orban said in his position that he could accept the text as it is, but asked for additional guarantees in case there has been an “accident”.

However, the European source pointed out that there could be a political agreement tonight.

Draghi: It is crucial that Putin does not win

“It’s essential that Putin does not win this war. At the same time, we need to ask ourselves if it can be useful to have a dialogue with him,” said Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, speaking at a news conference in Brussels. EU governments, as reported by the Italian media.

At the same time, he explained that he is skeptical about the various telephone communications with the Russian president, but “there is, indeed, a reason for them to take place.”

The newspaper La Repubblica adds that the Italian technocratic prime minister stressed that the battle for food security needs to be won because it is a way to prove to the poorest countries that Europe is on their side.

According to the main news bulletins of the Italian television channels, Draghi reiterated to his European colleagues that “Ukraine must decide what kind of peace it wants”, because “if Ukraine does not agree to the terms, peace will not be sustainable.” .

The Italian Prime Minister stressed that the member states of the European Union must maintain their unity in terms of sanctions against Russia (especially in the oil sector) and stressed the need to diversify supplies and energy sources in order to the EU to end its dependence on Russia.

Teleconference with Zelensky

The European leaders’ teleconference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky lasted about ten minutes, according to a European official.

Mr Zelensky called on Europeans to remain united and to agree on a sixth package of sanctions as soon as possible.

According to the same source, many children have lost their lives between the fifth and the sixth package of sanctions, while he stressed that the path of sanctions is the only one that Vladimir Putin understands.
