Sunak makes first speech as British prime minister: ‘I will unite our country’

The new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak, gave his first speech in office on Tuesday morning (25).

He spoke in front of the famous black door at 10 Downing Street in London, the seat of the British government, after meeting King Charles III at Buckingham Palace for his nomination for the post of premier.

In his first speech, Sunak said he would unite the country and told the audience that Liz Truss, who formally resigned on Tuesday, had made “mistakes” that he was appointed to correct.

“It’s fair to explain why I’m here as your new prime minister,” he said.

“Right now, our country is facing a deep economic crisis. The consequences of Covid still linger. Putin’s war in Ukraine has destabilized energy markets and supply chains across the world,” he added.

“I want to pay tribute to my predecessor Liz Truss,” Sunak said. “She was not wrong to want to improve growth in this country. It’s a noble goal and I admired her eagerness to create change. But some mistakes were made,” she pointed out.

“Not born of ill will or bad intentions, quite the opposite. But mistakes nonetheless,” Sunak said. He added that he was chosen to lead the Conservatives “in part to fix them, and that work begins immediately.”
