Super Typhoon Doksuri hits China after killing 39 in the Philippines

China: More than 23,000 people leave their homes due to typhoon Typhoon Doksuri hit the southeast coast of China on Friday (28), state meteorological agencies said. The storm hit parts of the Philippines and killed at least 39 people, including dozens on an overcrowded boat that capsized in high winds.

The typhoon made landfall in coastal Jinjiang county in China’s Fujian province at 9:55 am, the National Meteorological Center said. Most of the country’s southeastern provinces can expect heavy rain for most of this Friday, with rainfall projected to reach 270mm in some parts of the region.

Winds at the time of landing were approaching 175 km/h, according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, but the storm’s interaction with land likely reduced the wind speed slightly.

Taiwan is still experiencing heavy rain from the storm. However, the island’s weather agency removed its heavy rain warning early on Friday.

Doksuri passed through the Philippines’ most populous island, Luzon, earlier in the week. The northern region of the archipelago most affected by the strong storm.

At least 26 people were killed after a boat capsized on Thursday afternoon just meters from reaching Talim Island, southeast of the capital Manila, the coast guard said.

The vessel — which was supposed to have a capacity of just 42 people — had at least 66 people on board, according to the coast guard.

“We are definitely going to file a complaint with the PNP (Philippine National Police) against the captain and operator of the speedboat,” coast guard spokesman Rear Admiral Armand Balilo told reporters. CNN Philippines .

Another 13 people died in other parts of the country due to Typhoon Doksuri – known as Egay in the Philippines -, the National Council for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management said on Friday.

The storm brought flooding to five regions and triggered more than a dozen rain-induced landslides, the agency added.
