It is the third Superluna of the year, there are four in a row between spring and summer 2022, all to be seen in the summer sky. This is that of the deer. The name comes from the Native American tradition because new deer antlers usually appear in July. The other name is Full Moon of thunderstorms, due to their frequency during this period.
In the alignment of the Sun, Earth and Moon, the latter appears larger and brighter than usual. For this it is called Superluna or more correctly Luna Full al Perigee. The next is August 12, known as the sturgeon.
At 8:38 pm the Moon will be full, about nine hours after its passage through the perigee, that is, at the minimum distance from the Earth: 357,263 km from us, against an average distance of just over 384,000 km. It will be a little closer, brighter and a little bigger than usual. The spectacle of the Full Moon is maximum at its rising, or at the setting of the Sun, or at the sunset of our satellite, or at dawn.

“The Superluna will appear approximately 7% larger and a little brighter than average, but only an expert observer could realize it, ”says Gianluca Masi, astrophysicist, scientific director of the Virtual Telescope Project. “These are not exactly striking variations, which nevertheless add charm to the event, a precious opportunity to admire our natural satellite in the context of the night sky, an increasingly neglected and forgotten landscape”.
The moments of greatest visibility of the Superluna are at the rising of the moon and at its waning, then at dusk and dawn. “During twilight, the remaining sunlight allows you to admire the Earth’s landscape as the full Moon rises or falls on the horizon. At night its light is very intense, almost dazzling, compared to the very discreet one of the panorama. At its rise or sunset, the Moon is projected behind buildings and elements of the landscape, generating the sensation that its disk is larger, but it is only an optical illusion, due precisely to the presence in the visual field of terms of comparison ».
The invitation is to go out and look at the sky from 8:45 pm onwards. The Virtual Telescope will film the Superluna as it rises on the horizon of Rome, sharing the vision live. The live broadcast is scheduled to start at 21. An evening of observations of the Moon was also organized with INAF telescopes and UAI delegations live streaming to celebrate the Superluna of the year.
