Support for Ukraine’s candidacy is Europe’s message for Putin, says expert

The European Commission’s decision to support the status of Ukraine as an official candidate for membership of the European Union this Friday (17) served as a message for Russia, says Carlos Poggio, professor of international relations at Faap.

In an interview with CNN this Friday, the professor said that the acceptance is “a message to Putin that Europe is supporting Ukraine, but definitive entry into the bloc is very difficult in the short or medium term”.

He assesses that, under normal conditions, Ukraine would not have “the least conditions” to enter the European Union, as the process takes into account criteria such as corruption, economy, rule of law and democracy.

“Ukraine does not meet these criteria, and it would take a long time to reach the level that the European Union requires from its member states,” he said.

However, he points out that the war with Russia changed the scenario and allowed the acceleration of this process, but that should not result in the country joining the bloc any time soon.
