Police in Brasilia are using tear gas to push back hundreds of supporters of far-right ex-Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who have flooded the area around Congress and scaled the building, a week after leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was sworn in.
The zone around the Congress was cordoned off by heavy police forces. However, Bolsonaro’s supporters, who refuse to accept Lula’s election to the presidency, managed to break the cordon. Dozens of them climbed the ramp of the building and climbed up to the roof.
The dramatic footage, reminiscent of the invasion of the US Capitol, shows a crowd of people heading to Congress.
The Congress building houses the Parliament and the Senate of Brazil.
Demonstrators also occupied the green of neighboring buildings, including the Planalto presidential palace.
Bolsonaro, defeated by Lula in the second round of the presidential election, left the country late last week and is in the United States.
Brazilian media reported that Lula is not in Brasilia but in Sao Paulo.
