Supreme Court of Israel: Resignation of internal security head was illegal

The Supreme Court of Israel ruled that the government’s decision to dismiss the head of the Shin Bet Internal Intelligence Service was “illegal and contrary to the law,” said Israeli media on Wednesday (21).

In its decision, the Supreme Court determined that the dismissal was made in violation of the law and that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had a conflict of interest due to an investigation into the “Qatar-Gate” case.

Netanyahu announced in March that he was firing Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar, generating protests across the country.

Critics argued that the government was undermining important state institutions and endangering the foundations of Israeli democracy.

Bar announced his resignation in April, stating that he would leave office on June 15, six weeks after Netanyahu attempted to deprive him.

The Supreme Court later suspended the government’s attempted attempted Bar, which claimed that Netanyahu wanted to dismiss him for refusing requests that included spying Israeli protesters and disrupting the prime minister’s corruption trial, accusations Netanyahu rejected.
