The Supreme Court of Justice of Peru rejected, on Friday (31), a new appeal filed by the defense of former President Pedro Castillo, in addition to ratifying the 36-month preventive detention against the former rural teacher investigated for corruption.
The defense of the former president argued in a hearing, on Wednesday (29), that there is no risk of fleeing. However, Judge César San Martín Castro rejected the request of the lawyers and the former president.
During the presentation before the judge, Castillo said that he did not lead or is part of a criminal network.
“The Public Prosecutor’s Office requested preventive detention against me not because there was danger in the process, but to comply with an order to keep me in custody at all costs,” said Castillo.
The former president was detained on Dec. 7 after Congress declared the presidency vacant following Castillo’s announcement to unconstitutionally dissolve Parliament.
Castillo is being investigated for the alleged crimes of rebellion or conspiracy, abuse of authority and serious disturbance of public order by violating the constitutional order, according to the investigation initiated by the Public Ministry.
The ex-president’s wife and children are in Mexico after that country granted them asylum.
