Suricake, the sweet that came out of a Jewish family’s cookbook and has conquered SP

A sweetie has invaded social networks and made a lot of people drool on the screens. And the suricake a cake made with layers of crispy wafer sheets and, between these sheets, a thin honey chocolate coating.

The recipe is closely guarded by Miriam and Mayara, mother and daughter who turned the family sweet into a business. It all started with constant requests from friends who, after tasting the addictive squares, of course, asked for more.

If friends liked it so much and were willing to pay for the candy, the question was: why not take a risk and turn it into a business? So, in June 2022, they opened an Instagram account for the brand and, through word of mouth, sales began.

The business is still small, production comes from Mrs. Miriam who needed to adapt the environment to make it more professional. Who responds to the brand’s Insta and has direct contact with consumers is Mayara, a lawyer who divides her time between legal procedures and the family business.

Mrs. Surica Meiler, born in 1931 in Bucharest, Romania, unfortunately died without knowing that her recipe, served only on special occasions for the family, would become famous. Sura, Miriam’s mother and creator of the crunchy cake, came to Brazil to escape Nazi persecution during World War II. Among her favorite hobbies, cooking was the main one, a passion passed on to her daughter.

Among the Jewish recipes prepared to perfection by the matriarch, this cake was a must to end festive meals. Thus, in a kitchen of an apartment in Higienópolis and full of stories and affective memories, Suricake was born, a tribute to Sara or Sura in Yiddish (a language derived from High German, historically spoken by Ashkenazi Jews).

Sweets must be ordered one day in advance at brand instagram and they cost R$ 12 each unit or R$ 220 a box with 24 pieces + shipping.
