Surrealism and magic: the Venice exhibition for new visionaries

Welcome in the magical world of Surrealism where everything, really everything is possible. It is no coincidence that the artists of the twentieth century who, inspired by Freud’s research, went into the maze of the mind to fix our dark side are back in fashion.

The same Biennale Arte of Venice which opens on April 23 takes the title The milk of dreams from the illustrated book created by the surrealist painter Leonora Carrington (keep the name in mind: we will find it again).

Well, this magical and suspended atmosphere adapts perfectly to the light of the canals of the Serenissima so much so that even the prestigious Peggy Guggenheim Collection has decided to dedicate its next major exhibition to the theme. Surrealism and magic. Enchanted modernity (from this weekend until September 26th), curated by Gražina Subelytė, is the first international exhibition to address the interest of surrealist artists in magic, esotericism, mythology and the occult at the Barberini Museum in Potsdamwith which it is organized).

In Venice we see about sixty works, starting from this iconic painting from Max Ernst:

The work is only one of the pieces of the patrimony of surrealist works of which Peggy Guggenheim (1898-1979), patron and collector based in Venice (“the dogaressa” was called, such was its importance in the cultural life and social of the city) loved to surround himself well before Surrealism became, both in art and in literature, the “pure Avant-garde” that everyone, especially in the beautiful world, appreciated.

The journey into the exhibition proceeds with the bewildered paintings by René Magritte (see this below and read the title: the game is all in the ambiguity of the message).
