Surrogacy is now considered a “universal crime” in Italy

The Italian parliament has finally approved a law that defines surrogacy as an “ecumenical crime”. Under the new legislation, Italian citizens who choose this method will face penalties, even if they resort to surrogacy in countries where it is legal. The law provides for imprisonment of up to two years, as well as the possibility of a fine of up to one million euros. They are the same penalties that were instituted 20 years ago, and until today only applied to those who resorted to surrogacy within Italy. This is the strictest law at the European level and in all Western countries.
