Survey shows that cyber attacks in Brazil grew 94%

In the first half of 2022, Brazil recorded 31.5 billion attempted cyber attacks on companies. The number is 94% higher compared to the first half of last year, when there were 16.2 billion records.

The data belongs to a survey by Fortnite, a cybersecurity solutions company. The study was conducted by the intelligence and threat laboratory, FortiGuard Labs.

Considering Latin America, the country is second only to Mexico, which had 85 billion attempts.

Following the list, Colombia appears with 6.3 billion attacks and, in fourth place, Peru, with 5.2 billion.

According to Alexandre Bonatti, director of Fortnite, one of the reasons for so many attacks in the country is the low investment in cybersecurity in Brazil.

“The scenario started to change after the pandemic, but it still corresponds to 10% of total investments in technology. In other countries, companies spend around 25% to 30% on technology for cybersecurity.”

In Brazil, approved by Decree nº 9.637/2018, the National Information Security Policy (PNSI) covers cyber security, cyber defense, physical security and the protection of organizational data.

This policy is implemented through the National Information Security Strategy (ENSI) and national plans.

The Fortnite survey demonstrates another concern: more sophisticated scams like ransomware.

“It is a type of malware for data hijacking, characterized by the criminals demanding ransom. Victim data is encrypted and used as a hostage. To regain access, the company has to pay the amount that the criminals ask for”, explains Bonatti.

Usually, when a hacker gains access, the victim is asked to pay a ransom with cryptocurrencies. This makes it difficult for the police to track the action of criminals.
