Survey: voters prefer Trump for the economy and Biden for defending democracy

United States voters see Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump as the best option for the economy and prefer his rival, President Joe Biden, to preserve democracy, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll.

The three-day poll concluded on Sunday (23) showed that the electorate is divided over the candidates’ approach to issues considered most problematic in the country in less than five months before the US elections on November 5.

Biden’s approval rating, as measured by all respondents in the poll, rose within the margin to 37%.

In May, the measure was 36%, when it tied for the lowest reading of the presidency so far.

Many Democrats worry about voter concerns about Biden’s age. The president, at 81 years old, is the oldest in the United States to hold the office. In addition, there is another fear of disapproval within his party for supporting Israel’s war against Hamas.

When asked which of the two candidates had a better approach to the economy – the top concern among those surveyed – registered voters chose Trump by 43% to 37%.

Americans have been hit by a multi-year streak of rapidly rising consumer prices, even though inflation has eased considerably in recent months and the unemployment rate has been below 4% for more than two years.

The Republican had a more significant advantage – 44% to 31% – on the issue of immigration.

In 2022, immigrants represented 13.9% of the country – the highest percentage in more than a century. Trump targeted illegal immigrants in the country and was favored by between 40% and 35% on foreign conflicts and terrorism.

But Biden had an edge over Trump in responding to political extremism and threats to democracy, the second biggest concern among respondents. Registered voters chose the Democrat over Trump by 39% to 33%.

Trump, who was convicted last month on criminal charges of falsifying business records, is awaiting three more criminal trials.

Two of the trials are linked to efforts to overturn Biden’s 2020 election loss.

Trump claims his 2020 election loss was the result of fraud. He included the claim in a fiery speech shortly before hundreds of his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Biden also had an advantage over Trump on health policy – 40% to 29%. The Democrat was vice president in 2010, when then-President Barack Obama pushed through Congress a historic healthcare reform that dramatically increased access to health insurance.

Previous Reuters/Ipsos polls have shown Biden and Trump neck and neck in the presidential race, although a series of polls in swing states have shown Trump ahead in recent months.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll, conducted nationwide and online, collected responses from 1,019 American adults, including 856 registered voters. The poll had a margin of error of 3.2 percentage points for all respondents and 3.5 percentage points for registered voters.
