“We offered Bruna a ride. She wanted to wait for a friend.” This is how Rafael Birman reported to CNN his last meeting with Bruna Valeanu, a Brazilian who was killed during the Hamas attack on a rave in Israel, on October 7, where he was also.
After that moment, Rafael and a group of friends crossed unknown territories until they found a safe shelter. They did not realize that the action of the radical Islamic group was not restricted to that party.
“We were the target”
There was no abnormality during the event. The Brazilian said that the regulars danced together and had fun until the terrorist invasion. There was no alternative but to flee — even if I wasn’t sure where to go.
“While escaping, we came across a destroyed car. The girl [que dirigia o veículo] it was bloody, and warned of the presence of terrorists,” he said.
He and his colleagues took a shortcut along a dirt road, until the danger was closer than ever: “When one of our car windows blew out, we realized we were the target.”
When they arrived at a small inhabited town, an Israeli offered them food, water and shelter. Only then was Rafael able to tell his family that he was safe and realized that the episode he experienced marked the beginning of a war.
Rafael had to leave the city of Tel Aviv, where he lived, against his will: “I didn’t want to leave, but the days went by and I was afraid to go to the streets”.
In addition to Bruna, who was 24 years old, two other Brazilians were killed in the conflict: Ranani Glazer, also 24 years old, and Karla Stelzer, 42.
