SUS provided almost 14 million psychological consultations in 2024

According to data from the Ministry of Health, the Unified Health System (SUS) carried out almost 13.9 million psychological consultations in the first six months of 2024 alone a significant increase compared to previous years. Psychologist’s Day, celebrated on August 27, coincides with a time of expansion of mental health services in Brazil.

The numbers demonstrate the population’s growing access to mental health services. In 2023, 27.9 million psychological consultations were carried out in the SUS, an increase of 23% compared to the previous year, when 22.7 million were attended to. In the first six months of 2024, 13.9 million consultations were already recorded, evidencing the growing demand for these services by the Brazilian population.

Service system

The Psychosocial Care Network (RAPS), made up of 17 care points, is responsible for ensuring access to mental health services in Primary, specialized and hospital care.

According to the ministry, the Federal Government allocated more than R$16.6 billion to RAPS in 2023, covering psychosocial teams in various services, such as Primary Prison Care, Assessment and Monitoring of Therapeutic Measures and Family Health. For 2024, the planned investment is R$17.1 billion.

In 2023, the Ministry of Health created the Department of Mental Health, Alcohol and Other Drugs and began the construction of 200 new Psychosocial Care Centers (CAPS), with 150 of them financed by the PAC, totaling more than R$409 million in investments.
