A 35-year-old man suspected of killing former football player Márcio Roberto dos Santos Ribeiro, who was known as “Márcio Baby”, was arrested in the early hours of this Sunday (28), in Belo Horizonte, almost three years after the crime.
Baby was a former Fluminense defender and was killed in April 2021 during an attempted robbery in Rio de Janeiro. At the time, two suspects were identified and arrested. The third person involved in the attack, arrested this Sunday, was on the run and was wanted by the courts.
According to the Minas Gerais Military Police, at 2:44 am today, authorities received an anonymous tip informing the location of a drug dealer in the Venda Nova region, in the capital of Minas Gerais. When officers arrived at the scene, they identified a suspicious man, dressed in a football shirt and shorts, operating in the region.
When approached, the individual tried to flee on foot, but was caught and immediately detained by the police.
Known as “marquinhos”, the suspect was a fugitive from Rio de Janeiro for the crime of robbery, committed against the former player in 2021. According to the PM, an arrest warrant had already been issued against him by the Rio Court of Justice. de Janeiro (TJ-RJ) since the time of the crime. Around R$1,700 was also seized from the suspect.

Death in 2021
Former football player Márcio Roberto dos Santos Ribeiro, popularly known as “Márcio Baby”, died on April 6, 2021, at the age of 48, after being shot during an attempted robbery in Vila da Penha, North Zone of Rio.
Márcio Baby was taken to a care unit, but did not survive his injuries and died the day after the attack.
Márcio played for Fluminense from 1992 to 1994. At the time of the former player's death, the Rio club released a note of condolence lamenting the athlete's death:
“Fluminense deeply regrets the tragic death of former player Márcio Baby. The club wishes its friends and family a lot of strength at this difficult time.”, the club announced on social media on the day of the former defender's death.
The police continue with investigations to clarify the crime.
