A suspected participant in the explosion that killed at least six people and wounded 81 others in Istanbul on Sunday (13) was detained on Monday (14), according to Turkey’s interior ministry.
Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said that according to “preliminary findings”, Kurdish separatists from the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and Democratic Union Party (PYD) were likely behind the bombing.
“Not long ago, the person who left the bomb (was) taken into custody by teams from the Istanbul Police Department. Before the arrest, 21 more people were also detained,” Soylu said. “The face of terrorism is bitter, but we will continue this fight until the end, whatever the cost.”
The case was considered a terrorist attack by Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay on Sunday, according to state news agency Anadolu. “We consider it a terrorist act as a result of an attacker, who we consider to be a woman, detonating the bomb,” Oktay said.
Security camera footage shows a woman sitting on a bench for more than 40 minutes. She left a bag or plastic bag behind when she got up a minute or two before the blast, Turkish Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag said.
“There are two possibilities. Either that plastic bag or bag has a mechanism in it, it explodes by itself or someone detonates it from afar. All of these are currently under investigation.” added the minister.
“The woman’s name is unknown,” he said. “All recordings and data on the woman are being analyzed.”
Interior Minister Soylu said fifty of the 81 injured people had been discharged from the hospital, with 31 people still undergoing treatment.
