Suspect in the Madeleine case is acquitted on charges of sexual abuse

The Brunswick court acquitted a man suspected in the disappearance of British child Madeleine McCann on sexual abuse charges unrelated to Maddie’s case this Tuesday (8).

Christian Brueckner has been formally identified as a suspect in the case of “Maddie” McCann, who disappeared from her hotel room in 2007 while on a family vacation in Portugal. He denies any involvement and charges have not been laid.

At trial in Brunswick, Brueckner faced three counts of aggravated rape and two counts of child molestation committed between 2000 and 2017.

Prosecutors argued for the German citizen to be sentenced to 15 years in prison, while his lawyer asked for him to be acquitted.

Brueckner, in his 40s, is already serving a seven-year prison sentence in Germany for raping a woman in the Algarve region of Portugal, where McCann disappeared.
