Suspect of offering false job vacancies in state-owned companies is arrested in RJ

The Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro arrested, last Saturday (28), a man suspected of scamming unemployed people in Rio de Janeiro. Marcelo Baiense Varges, 45 years old, advertised job vacancies and demanded fees to enroll the victims in an alleged course required by recruiting companies.

According to the police, he offered false job vacancies in large state-owned companies, with supposed salaries ranging between R$10,000 and R$15,000. The scammer told the candidate that it was necessary to pay a fee to enroll in a course requested by the contractor.

Investigations showed that many of the victims took out loans from banks to pay the amount requested by the criminal, but ended up without a job and even more in debt.

Police officers from the 12th Police Station, in Copacabana, under the coordination of delegate Ângelo Lages, carried out preventive arrest warrants issued in 2023 against Marcelo Varges for the crimes of embezzlement and extortion.

Aware of the existence of the warrants, the criminal installed monitoring cameras on the street where he lives, in Queimados, in the metropolitan region, and started waking up early to observe possible police movements.

On another occasion, he noticed the presence of the agents and fled through the back of his house, where there is a bush. This time, the police used unmarked vehicles and surrounded the target’s entire residence.

According to Lages, Marcelo has 26 police experience, mostly for cases of embezzlement, committed since 2005. He has already been convicted four times for the crime of embezzlement, in addition to having convictions for theft. If added together, the sentences already applied to the criminal reach 37 years in prison.
