Slovak President Zuzana Čaputová said the suspected gunman who shot Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has been detained by police. She said law enforcement agencies will release more information when they can and urged the public not to spread unconfirmed rumors.
Video from the scene showed a man lying on the ground being detained by several officers.
Fico suffered serious injuries when he was shot in an assassination attempt this Wednesday (15), the government office said.
Fico, 59, was rushed to hospital in the central town of Handlova after holding a government meeting there and was being transported by helicopter to the town of Banska Bystrica for urgent treatment, he said.
A Reuters witness heard several shots fired after the meeting in Handlova, northeast of the capital Bratislava.
Emergency services said they received reports of a man shot in Handlova shortly after 2.30pm local time and sent an emergency helicopter to a 59-year-old patient.
Broadcaster TA3 reported that four shots were fired and that the prime minister was hit in the abdomen.
