The United States Department of Justice accused Elias Rodriguez, 31, of willful murder in the case of shots of two employees of the Israeli embassy in Washington, DC, on Thursday (22).
Police recovered 21 shot bullets and a 9 mm pistol, according to court documents.
The department of alcohol, tobacco, firearms and explosives (ATF), tracking the gun recovered at the scene, found that it was bought by alleged shooter Elias Rodriguez in March 2020 in Illinois.
Rodriguez allegedly flew from Chicago to Washington, DC, on May 20 and declared a firearm in his checked baggage, according to court documents.
During an interrogation, Rodriguez told investigators that he had “bought a ticket to the event at the museum approximately three hours before its start,” according to prosecutors.
Remember the case
Two employees of the Israeli Embassy were shot and killed in front of the capital’s Jewish Museum in Washington, DC, where the American Jewish Committee held an event.
The victims, Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim, were a “young couple about to get a fiancé,” said Israel’s ambassador in the US.
The only suspect was identified as 31 -year -old Elias Rodriguez from Chicago, who shouted “free, free Palestine” while in custody, police said.
Witnesses said to CNN that he waited for the police to arrive before saying he “did it for Gaza.” Investigators expect Rodriguez to face a hate crime and other federal accusations, the sources say, and he must attend the court for the first time on Thursday.
President Donald Trump, who talked to Israeli Prime Minister about the attack, said on social networks that anti-Semitism, “hatred and radicalism has no place in the US.”
American politicians, Israeli authorities and world leaders condemned the murder, while friends and family recall the impact of the victims.
