Suspected of attack with knives in Amsterdam is Ukrainian, says police

The man suspected of stabbing five people in downtown Amsterdam on Thursday (27) is a 30-year-old Ukrainian from the Eastern region of Donetsk, local police said on Saturday (29).

The man is suspected of injuring five random people, using various knives, in an attack near the bustling Dam Square on Thursday afternoon (27).

He was arrested shortly after the crime and suffered a leg injury.

The man, who, according to police, stayed at an Amsterdam hotel on Wednesday (26), will be presented to a judge on April 1 to decide on his future detention.

This Saturday (29), the police were not yet sure about the motivation of stabbing and said the investigations follow.

The victims are a 26-year-old man from Poland, a 73-year-old Belgian woman, a 19-year-old woman from Amsterdam, and two Americans, a 67-year-old woman and a 69-year-old man.

The Polish was discharged from the hospital on Friday (28), while the other victims were still in the hospital, but in stable conditions, according to police.
