A 36-year-old man arrested on Wednesday (3) and suspected of participating in the kidnapping of 4-year-old Cleo Smith was taken to hospital after injuring himself while in police custody. The information is from the Western Australia Police.
Speaking to Perth radio station 6PR, Detective Superintendent Rod Wilde described the suspect’s injuries as “non-life-threatening”.
The man has now been transferred to a police station in Carnarvon and is cooperating with the investigations.
The suspect is due to be tried this Thursday afternoon, said Wilde. He will then be taken to the Magistrates’ Court of Carnarvon.
Police have declined to say what charges he will face, but say they believe the man acted alone and “spontaneously.”
Cleo Smith was found at dawn on Wednesday in a locked house in Carnarvon, a town in the state of Western Australia, about 30 miles from the camp where she was apparently kidnapped about three weeks ago.
Police said Cleo was found in a room in the house with the lights on, awake and playing with toys. Police have not yet interviewed the girl, but experts have come to Carnarvon to do so.
On Thursday, Western Australia’s Prime Minister Mark McGowan said he had met Cleo and her family, describing her as “very well-adjusted, considering the tragedy she’s been through.”
“She slept a little and ate a lot, lay down and got a lot of affection,” McGowan said.
Detective Superintendent Wilde said Cleo was also examined at the hospital and “physically, she’s fine.”
