Suspects of organizing cockfights and threatening Amazonas deputy are arrested

The civil police of Amazonas, Roraima, Minas Gerais and Paraíba arrested, this Thursday (2), four men suspected of promoting cockfighting in Manaus and other cities across the country.

“These offenders organized cockfights with the aim of raising large amounts of money and then taking that capital,” said general delegate Bruno Fraga, at a press conference this Thursday.

The prisoners were identified as:

  • Dionedio Conrado da Silva, 39 years old;
  • Jeberson Nunes de Sousa Carvalho, 38;
  • Miller Kalil Lana Sirio, 44;
  • and Petrus Cartaxo Araújo Sobrinho, “Pisca”, 31.

Dionedio acted as a fight referee, while Pisca, owner of “several roosters”, financed events “all over Brazil”, being a partner of Miller Kalil and Jeberson in projects, said delegate Juliana Viga.

The group, according to the police, organized online bets and sold raffle tickets worth roosters, and advertised the fights openly on social media. The four were already being investigated for death threats received by state deputy Joana Darc (União).

Joana Darc is president of the Animal Protection Commission of the Legislative Assembly of the State of Amazonas (Aleam). The group will respond in court for threats, insults, slander, persecution and psychological violence against women due to the threats.

The commission chaired by congresswoman Joana Darc is the faithful custodian of more than 80 live roosters rescued in an operation against rhinos launched months earlier in Amazonas, in January this year.

“These people involved in cockfighting are people who think things will go nowhere. And, for the first time, and in an exemplary way, we managed to go against all of this”, celebrated the deputy in stories on her Instagram profile.

According to delegate Juliana Viga, who works at Dema, the police station specializing in environmental crimes in Amazonas, the group “even created a group on a messaging app to promote the rescue of the most valuable rooster, 'Rampage'”.

Dionedio was arrested in Manaus, Jeberson, in Boa Vista, Miller Kalil, in Governador Valadares (MG), and Petrus, in João Pessoa. “They will undergo a custody hearing and will be available to the Judiciary,” stated the Amazonas Civil Police in a statement.

According to the Amazonian police, the four will be charged with mistreatment of animals resulting in death, criminal association, exploitation of games of chance, incitement and support for crime, threats, insults, slander, persecution and psychological violence against women.

A CNN tries to locate the defense of those involved. The space for response is open.
