Suspension of ITA flights causes confusion at Guarulhos airport

After the ITA airline announced the temporary suspension of its operations, a riot broke out at Guarulhos airport in São Paulo as passengers protest the canceled flights.

On Thursday night (17), a group of people with tickets purchased on flights from the Itapemirim Group began blocking passengers’ access to the airport’s departure area.

“At the Itapemirim window there were no employees. Chaos broke out, everyone clapping, screaming, asking for direction from the company,” he told CNN the passenger Lidiane Santos.

She informed that the confusion remained throughout the night in the place. “There was no direction. I managed to board this morning on another airline, buying another ticket. At Itapemirim, there is still no one and passengers continue to block the passage of other companies”, he said.

Wanted by CNN, the airport’s advisors instructed passengers with scheduled flights to consult the airline before proceeding to the airport.

The Itapemirim Group has temporarily suspended all operations of its airline, ITA, for an internal restructuring, informed the company in a statement released on Friday night (17).

According to the company, the decision was taken because of “the need for operational adjustments”. “Anac (National Civil Aviation Agency) has already been informed of the decision,” said the company.

The decision affected passengers on more than 500 ITA flights scheduled between Friday (17) and December 31st.

The company lamented the inconvenience caused and stated that it will continue to provide all assistance to the impacted passengers, with “the utmost effort to, soon, resume their flights.”
