Suzano obtains second injunction against MST in Bahia

Suzano Papel e Celulose obtained yet another injunction for the repossession of areas invaded by the Landless Movement (MST) in southern Bahia.

This Friday (3), the Justice determined the eviction of the area located in Teixeira de Freitas.

Judge Livia de Oliveira Figueiredo ordered the use of police force if the invaders did not leave voluntarily.

The company had already obtained a similar decision for the property located in Mucuri last Tuesday. But so far the government of Bahia has not complied with the decision.

Another process for vacating the farm in Caravelas is still under analysis.

The Minister of Agrarian Development, Paulo Teixeira, asked the MST to vacate the farms and start negotiations with the company.

The MST complains about a 2011 agreement for the settlement of families in the company’s areas, which would not have been complied with. Suzano alleges that Incra did not carry out the clearings.

In an interview with CNN Walter Schalka, president of Suzano, said that “there is no dialogue with the MST until the properties are vacated”.

Brazilian legislation prohibits land invasions and only authorizes expropriations for land reform purposes in unproductive regions. The farms invaded by the MST are productive.

Suzano informs that it generates 7,000 direct jobs and 20,000 indirect ones in the south of Bahia.
