Suzano says MST vacated invaded properties in Bahia

The Landless Workers Movement (MST) vacated all the properties of the pulp paper manufacturer Suzano, in the south of Bahia. The company confirmed to CNN that the areas in the municipalities of Mucuri, Teixeira de Freitas and Caravelas were released.

Also according to Suzano, the company is now investigating the damage caused.

The departure from the premises, in compliance with the decision of the Court, took place in a peaceful and organized manner.

On Monday (6), the Minister of Agrarian Reform, Paulo Teixeira, had said that he expected the withdrawal to take place today.

The repossession comes more than a week after the invasion of the properties, which took place on Monday of last week.

Suzano had already obtained three preliminary injunctions in its favor, as land invasion is prohibited by Brazilian law.

The government of Bahia, however, did not call the Military Police. This Wednesday (8) there is a conciliation meeting between Suzano and the MST.

Walter Schalka, president of Suzano, had told the CNN that he would only negotiate with the MST after the land was vacated.
