Celebrity obsession becomes a series. Horrors, of course. Is called Swarm (Swarm in the original), has just arrived on Prime Video, signed by Donald Glover and Janine Nabers (Atlanta) and enlisted — plus Billie Eilish, too Paris Jackson, Michael Jackson’s daughter.
It looks like a game of mirrors in which the stars lend themselves to interpreting stories that they have somehow experienced on their own skin.
In the case of Paris Jackson, it is a cameo in the second episode that sees her on stage in the role of Hailey, a stripper who performs in the club where the protagonist, Dre (Dominique Fishback) works. Hailey’s stage name is Halsey and – just like in reality – her character is a mixed singer. In the past, Michael Jackson’s daughter has always claimed African-American roots and even in her script, her character wants to be defined as a black woman. In an interview with Rolling StoneAmerica had stated that her father has always instilled in her a strong pride in her roots and she grew up with a very strong attachment to her origins.
The idea of Swarm? It remains just to show the dark side of fandom, that toxic attachment which is actually one of the negative aspects of celebrity. And there is no doubt that the artists involved, in one way or another, have experienced various forms of idolatry, which often lead to excesses. Just like it happens in nature the swarm gathers around the queen bee who in this case is the pop star Dre is obsessed with: the girl, in fact, has no goal in life, no value or social life, in short, she lives tied to this invisible cord that keeps her clinging to the singer. As if she were an empty shell that she lives on reflected light, precisely that of the popularity of her idol.
When admiration flows into something totally different and becomes an obsession that feeds itself in an endless vicious circle, the effects become devastating and unpredictable.
Taking part in such a project represents a rather strong signal from the stars why shows the audience perhaps never-before-seen insights into the world of Hollywood and surroundings. In short, it shows all the shadows of a world that seems perfect and glittering but which in reality also includes loneliness, pressures and standards that are sometimes impossible to achieve. AND when a star is placed on the pedestal he can fall even faster.
