Sweden announces military aid to Ukraine in the amount of almost $ 1.6 billion

Sweden has announced a new package of military aid to Ukraine worth 16 billion Swedish crowns ($ 1.59 billion) on Monday (31), the largest amount passed on by the country so far.

The Nordic nation has said it wants to help Ukraine strengthen its position in negotiations for the end of the war.

Most of the package – involving about nine billion crowns – will consist of new equipment that will be bought in processes led by the Swedish Administration of Defense Material, Defense Minister Pal Jonson told a press conference.

About five billion Swedish crowns will be financial donations to the Ukraine defense sector.

“We are now in a critical stage of war. Our focus now is to support Ukraine as much as possible so that it can be in a position of strength during these negotiations,” he said.

Jonson pointed out that all European countries now need to increase their support for Ukraine. “More countries need to do more,” he added.

Since taking office in January, US President Donald Trump has sought to intermediate a ceasefire to end the fighting.

Jonson was asked at the press conference if Europe has financial and production capacity to take more responsibility if the United States reduces support.

The minister stressed that he is “a little more concerned with industrial defense production than with financial resources.”

“The EU alone has an economy eight times larger than Russia, so if you want, there is a way to get ample support. Limitation has been industrial defense production in Europe, which has been adapted to peacetime,” he said.
