The activist for climate Greta Thunberg has said she will not attend the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Scotland in November amid concerns that inequality in access to COVID-19 vaccines will prevent many countries from being able to participate.
“Inequality and climate injustice are already at the ‘heart’ of the climate crisis,” the 18-year-old wrote. Tunberg on Twitter.
“If people cannot be vaccinated and travel to be represented equally, this is not democratic and will make the problem worse.”
Tunberg criticized those countries that she said are reluctant to share vaccines with those that have little access to them.
“Of course I would like to participate in # COP26 in Glasgow,” he wrote in a tweet. “But not until everyone can take part on the same terms. “Many countries are currently vaccinating healthy young people, often at the expense of vulnerable groups and front-line workers (mainly from the south, as is usually the case).”
It referred to Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Pacific Islands and developing countries in Asia and the Middle East.
Thunberg became famous in 2018 when she started a lonely protest against global warming outside the Swedish parliament in Stockholm, abstaining from school on Fridays to demand that her country’s government take action against climate change.
Within a few months, more than two million students in 135 countries began their own protest, participating in the Thunberg “School Climate Strike” campaign.
Speaking to the BBC about a series of documentaries, Thunberg said the Glasgow conference, which is expected to take place from November 1 to 12, should be canceled.
The UN Climate Change Summit (officially named, UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties) has already been postponed for a year due to the pandemic.
“It must be done in the right way. “Of course, it would be best for everyone to be vaccinated as soon as possible so that everyone can take part (in the session) on the same terms,” Tunberg said.
