Guilty of murder of a woman and plans to kill a prominent politician at a festival in July, a court ruled on Tuesday (6/12) Sweden and ordered his confinement in a mental institution.
The 33-year-old Swede was arrested in Visby on the Baltic Sea island of Gotland seconds after a woman was stabbed to death in a crowded square during Sweden’s annual Almendalen civic festival.
The killing took place near where Center Party leader Annie Loof was due to hold a press conference.
The Gotland court heard that the killer, Theodor Engström, had mapped out Loof’s agenda and planned to kill her. He said this was tantamount to preparing a terrorist crime.
“Sweden could have been seriously affected if the crime had been carried out. The 33-year-old has said that his intention was to take revenge on the Swedish populationsaid Judge Per Sandberg at a press conference, as reported by the Athens News Agency.
Engsterm pleaded guilty to the murder of psychiatrist Ing-Marie Wieselgren, but dismissed the charges related to Loof.
From the psychiatric examination ordered by the court, it was established that he had serious psychological problems when the attack took place.
