Sweden: Leven resigns as prime minister within week

Sweden’s Social Democrat prime minister, Stefan Leven, is expected to resign within days.

A spokeswoman for Mr Leven told the German news agency Deutsche Welle that the prime minister intended to brief Parliament Speaker Andreas Norlen earlier this week, but when exactly was still open.

The move was expected. Mr Leven had announced in August that he intended to step down as party leader and then as leader of the government.

With this initiative he wants to give his successor the opportunity to prepare more easily in view of the next parliamentary elections, which will be held in the Scandinavian country at the end of the summer of 2022.

Finance Minister Eva Magdalena Anderson was elected the party’s new leader on Thursday. The new leader of the Social Democrats will also succeed Stefan Leven as prime minister.

However, given the marginal majority of her party in the Swedish parliament, she will have to persuade other parties not to oppose her, to give her a vote of confidence.

The Social Democrats have ruled Sweden for years, working with the Greens, with whom it has formed a minority coalition government. Mr Leven has been Prime Minister since October 2015. Anderson will be the first woman to take over as Prime Minister, although Sweden is still one of the most advanced countries in terms of equality. of the sexes.
