Violent incidents erupted overnight in the southern Swedish city of Malmo following rallies denouncing a far-right group’s intention to burn a copy of the Koran, police said today.
“There were fires in various places during the night in Malmo,” police said in a statement.
Garbage bins, a bus and a car were burned, they explained. Many lawsuits have also been filed for property vandalism.
The incidents erupted after a gathering of the anti-immigrant and anti-Islamic “Hard Line” led by the Danish Danes Rasmus Palundan, who is currently organizing a tour in Sweden, resulting in many clashes between police and protesters in several Swedish cities.
Palutan’s rally on Saturday was moved from a Landskrona neighborhood to a car park in Malmo, a large neighboring city, to avoid clashes.
However, protests erupted in various parts of Malmo, with some throwing stones at police.
“The situation calmed down around 3 in the morning, there were some fires but the violence has stopped,” police spokeswoman Kim Hold told public radio SR, adding that no members of the security forces were injured.
The day before yesterday, Good Friday of the Catholics, police cars were set on fire in the city of Orebro, in the southern part of the country. There were also riots with stones in the capital Stockholm.
About 12 police officers were injured.
