THE Sweden plans to offer a booster dose of the covid-19 vaccine “to a large part of the population” in 2022, although it may start with the most vulnerable as early as the autumn, health officials said today.
However, the final decision has not yet been made, the Public Health Service said, at a time when many countries have indicated they intend to offer an additional dose to address the spread of the coronavirus delta strain due to concerns about reducing the effectiveness of vaccines against existing and new strains.
“Our assessment is that the virus cannot be eradicated and therefore the work of vaccination should be long-term and focused on reducing serious illness and mortality,” Sweden’s leading epidemiologist Anders Tegnel said in a statement.
Residents of nursing homes over the age of 80 and the displaced will initially have a booster dose of the covid-19 vaccine.
The Swedish Public Health Service also said that it was equally “important to pay special attention to the vaccination of people in low-vaccination geographical areas”.
Some countries have already announced that they will offer their citizens a third dose of covid-19 vaccine, while in others a debate has begun.
Israel has been administering a booster vaccine to immunocompromised patients since mid-July due to an increase in cases of covid-19 due to the coronavirus delta variant strain.
