Its prime minister Sweden Stefan Leven said today it plans to step down in November to allow its successor to prepare for the September 2022 parliamentary elections.
Leven specifically announced his intention to step down from the leadership of the Social Democratic Party of Sweden, as well as from the prime minister’s office, during his party’s annual congress in the fall.
He has been thinking about the decision for a long time, he stressed during a speech in Akersberga, near Stockholm, acknowledging that the party needs new leadership and new energy.
The 64-year-old politician has been leading his party for 10 years and became prime minister in 2014. He remained in the presidency until June 28 last year, when he resigned, as a result of the vote of no confidence against him a week ago.
After a week of political crisis, he was nominated for prime minister again and secured the necessary votes in the Swedish parliament.
“Everything has an end and I want to give my successor the best possible opportunities,” he stressed today.
It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post.
