Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Leven has condemned one attacked a young man with a knife in the southern city of Vetlanda, which police are investigating as a possible “terrorist crime”, reports APE.
“We are facing such horrific acts with the united force of our society,” said the Swedish prime minister.
Eight people were injured, two of them seriously, in the attack, according to police. The alleged perpetrator, a man in his twenties, was wounded in the leg by police fire and arrested.
The suspect was in possession of a “sharp object”, police spokesman Christian Lungberg told AFP. According to local media, it was a knife.
No further details were given about the suspect, who is being treated after his injury.
The police and secret services, which are cooperating in this case, “are constantly assessing the need for security measures and we are ready to do so, if necessary,” said Prime Minister Leven.
In Vetlanda, a small provincial town of 12,000, about 50 miles[80 km]from Jensping, the alarm went off at about 3:00 pm (4:00 pm Greek time).
The injuries are of different severity, according to the first data.
“These are horrific events and our thoughts are with the victims and their relatives. “At the moment, it is not known exactly what happened and what the motive was,” said Minister Michael Dumberg in a statement.
In Sweden, the intelligence services consider the terrorist threat high and often make adjustments, especially after attacks in European countries.
The Nordic country has twice been the target of terrorist attacks in recent years.
Most recently, in 2017, an Uzbek whose asylum application had been rejected dragged pedestrians to Stockholm in a stolen truck, killing five people. He was sentenced to life in prison in June 2018 for terrorism.
In December 2010, a man carried out a suicide attack in central Stockholm, but caused only minor injuries.
