THE Sweden recorded today the highest number of new cases of Covid-19 since the end of last year.
Sweden is facing its third wave of Covid-19, with a sharp rise in cases in recent weeks, following a decline in January and February. The country today counted 7,706 new COVID-19 infections, the highest number since December 30.
“Unfortunately, the negative trend in infections continues, as in many other countries in Europe now,” Anders Tegnel, a leading epidemiologist, told a news conference.
New strains of the virus, especially those first identified in Britain, are contributing to the new wave of cases, but authorities also point out that studies show that compliance with the rules and recommendations is declining.
The country of 10 million people also recorded 16 new deaths, with the total death toll from the coronavirus amounting to 13,373. According to the country’s Health Authority, deaths remain low at present, in part due to the fact that a large percentage of the most vulnerable groups have been vaccinated.
“We have achieved good coverage in vaccinations, in the most important groups of society. “Among the food in nursing homes, we can see that 93% have taken one dose and 87% have taken two doses.”
Sweden also announced today that it would resume use of the AstraZeneca vaccine for those over 65, after postponing its use last week due to reports of blood clots in people who were vaccinated with the drug.
